The coverage included a feature story in a large monthly magazine and numerous stories in some of Sweden’s largest daily papers, as well as a 15-minute feature on Swedish TV’s most watched news program.

Following a lengthy strike authorization meeting, Machinists union members of District 837 who are employed at the Boeing-St. Louis, MO, Defense Systems plant voted by a margin of 99 percent to authorize a strike if the final contract offer from the company is not accepted on June 13, 2010.

Local 743 Machinists Ratify Pact with Hamilton Sunstrand

Members of Local 743 in Windsor Locks, CT, have voted overwhelmingly to approve a new three-year contract with aviation electronics manufacturer Hamilton Sundstrand Corp. The new accord, which covers more than 1,000 members, successfully addressed members’ top concerns.

Standing before more than 600 local and district representatives from the United States and Canada, IAM International President Tom Buffenbarger vowed to do “whatever it takes” to protect and preserve the Machinists union. With more than 36,000 IAM members out of work in the current recession, representatives and staff members were reminded in the strongest terms of their obligation to organize and help grow the union.

NFL Players Welcomed at IAM Staff Conference

In the latest chapter of a relationship that goes back decades, two members of the National Football League Players Association (NFLPA) addressed more than 600 IAM representatives gathered in Houston for the 2010 National Staff Conference. Running back Steve Slaton and offensive lineman Chester Pitts, both of the Houston Texans, were greeted with a standing ovation that grew to touchdown volume when they voiced their strong support for union members employed by NASA at the nearby Johnson Space Center.

District 19 Reaches Tentative Agreement with Amtrak

IAM District 19 has reached a tentative five-year agreement with Amtrak covering 555 Machinists at the nation’s passenger rail carrier. The tentative agreement, covering wages, health insurance and work rules, is being sent to the Amtrak membership for review and with a ratification recommendation from District 19.

Southern Territory Organizes Maxwell AFB Workers

A group of service contract workers at Maxwell-Gunter AFB in Montgomery, AL, became the first group at the base to secure IAM representation. The group, who are employed by Science Management Resources, Inc., voted recently for IAM representation and a contract negotiated under Service Contract Act (SCA) guidelines.

IAM President Scolds Boeing CEO for Colombia FTA Support

International President Tom Buffenbarger called on Boeing Company CEO Jim McNerney to demand an end to rampant human rights abuses in Colombia as an essential pre-condition for the passage of any Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with that country. McNerney recently called for approval of free trade agreements with Colombia, Panama and South Korea.

France’s EADS to Bid for U.S. Tanker Contract

Airbus parent company EADS ( European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company) announced this week it will compete without a U.S. partner to build the next generation of aerial refueling tankers for the U.S. Air Force. Airbus/EADS previously dropped out of the tanker competition and said it would not bid without a U.S. partner.

Kansas Outsourcing Conference is Cancelled
